How to wash a bamboo modal hijab

Bamboo modal is soft, breathable and fluid, and like most plant-based fibres it's a little more delicate when wet. Treat it gently in the wash and it will keep its buttery drape.

  1. Take out pins and brooches. They snag the fine weave in the wash.
  2. Wash cold, 30°C at most. Hand wash in cool water, or use a gentle (delicate) machine cycle with the hijab in a mesh laundry bag.
  3. Use a small amount of mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener: softener coats the fibres and dulls the drape.
  4. Don't wring or twist. Press the water out gently, or roll the hijab in a clean towel.
  5. Air dry out of direct sun. Hang it over a rail or lay it flat. No tumble dryer: heat can shrink the fabric.

Our bamboo modal solids and prints all wash the same way.

How to wash a jersey hijab

Jersey is a knit, so it stretches. The goal is to keep it from stretching out of shape and to stop the surface from roughening up.

  1. Turn it inside out and take out any pins.
  2. Wash cold on a gentle cycle, in a mesh bag, with similar colours.
  3. Use mild detergent, with no bleach or fabric softener.
  4. Lay it flat to dry. Hanging wet jersey pulls it long and out of shape.
  5. Keep it out of the dryer. Heat can shrink the knit and make it fuzzy.

Prints and dark colours

Rich colours and prints stay vivid longest when they're kept cool and out of the sun.

  • Wash the first few times on their own or with similar colours, in cold water, inside out.
  • Dark shades like Ink, Cypress and Spotted keep their depth longer with a cold wash and less detergent.
  • Dry in the shade: direct sunlight fades colour, especially on wet fabric.

Ironing and steaming

Bamboo modal

Iron on low to medium heat while the hijab is still slightly damp, or use a steamer.

Jersey

Steam it, or use the lowest setting with a thin cloth between the iron and the hijab. High heat can leave a shine.

No iron?

Hang the hijab in the bathroom while you shower and let the steam relax the creases.

Makeup and everyday stains

Foundation, concealer and lipstick are the usual suspects along the face edge. Treat them as soon as you can.

  1. Blot, don't rub. Lift off what you can with a clean cloth.
  2. Dab with micellar water, or a drop of mild soap and cool water, working from the outside of the mark in.
  3. Rinse in cool water, then wash as usual. Hot water can set a stain.

For deodorant or sweat marks, soak the hijab in cool water with a little mild detergent for half an hour before washing.

Pilling, snags and shape

Pilling

Comes from friction: bag straps, collars and other clothes in the wash. Wash inside out in a mesh bag, and lift any pills with a fabric shaver or sweater comb on a flat surface.

Snags

Usually come from pins and jewellery. Don't cut or pull a snag: ease the fabric back with your fingers, or push the loop through to the inside with a needle.

Pins

Smooth-tipped hijab pins or magnets are kinder to fine fabrics than sharp safety pins.

Storing your hijabs

  • Fold or roll your hijabs and keep them in a drawer or basket, out of direct sunlight.
  • Rolling means fewer creases, which is also the best way to pack them for travel.
  • Bamboo modal can hang on a wide scarf hanger. Keep jersey folded, as hanging can stretch it over time.
  • Store them clean and fully dry.

Good to know

Hijab care questions

Can I put my hijab in the washing machine?

Yes. Use a cold, gentle (delicate) cycle and put the hijab in a mesh laundry bag so it doesn't snag or twist around other clothes. Take out any pins first. Hand washing in cool water is gentlest of all.

How often should I wash my hijab?

Most everyday hijabs only need a wash every two or three wears. Wash sooner after a hot day, a workout, or if makeup or deodorant has marked it. Washing less often keeps the fabric soft and the colour rich for longer.

Can I tumble dry a hijab?

It's best not to. Heat can shrink bamboo modal, stretch or roughen jersey, and fade colours. Hang bamboo modal or lay it flat to dry, and always lay jersey flat so it keeps its shape.

Why is my jersey hijab pilling?

Pilling comes from friction: bag straps, collars, and other clothes in the wash. Wash jersey inside out in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle, and gently lift any pills with a fabric shaver or sweater comb. Never pull them off by hand.

Will my bamboo modal hijab shrink?

Not if you keep the heat low. Wash it cold, skip the tumble dryer and let it air dry, and it will keep its size and soft drape.

How do I get creases out without an iron?

Hang the hijab in the bathroom while you shower and let the steam relax the creases, or use a handheld steamer. Rolling hijabs instead of folding them also means fewer creases to begin with.
